1913. The De Officiis ("On Duties"), written hurriedly not long before Cicero's death, has always commanded attention. While it is based on the moral philosophy of the Greek Stoic Panaetius, Cicero adapted the material to his audience in such a way that the book stands as an invaluable witness to Roman attitudes and behavior. This is a letter from a father (Cicero) to his son, so it is intimate in tone. It describes life in the Roman world at first hand. It also gives a clear account of Stoic philosophy and ethics, which are as valid today as when Cicero wrote the letter.
